Meeting maestro Volodymyr Sirenko, conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine

During their german Tour in October we could meet Volodymyr Sirenko, the conductor of the phantastic National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine after their concert in the Cologne Philharmony. Maestro Sirenko will also support our project Weplay4ukraine – and we hope that some of their great musicians will also find time to make a videoclip-contribution for our video-project.

With maestro Volodymyr Sirenko in the wardrobe of cologne Philharmonie after their wonderful concert. The maestro promised to advertise our video-project Weplay4ukraine.com among his musicians.

This is a part of the encore of a phantastic concert of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine – playing an arrangement of the carpathian Rhapsody by ukrainian composer Lewko Kolodub.

Two days later we had again the chance to meet the orchesetra once again in Wiesbaden.

Contribution by fluteplayer Nadiia Duldier from the Odesa Philharmonic

Nadiia uploaded her beautifully performed flutepart, dressed in the ukrainian folklore costume wyshewanka.

Nadiias Contribution is the first one from ukrainian musicians after my journey to Ukraine. Thank you very much! Now we hope to get many more contributions from Ukraine.

(On this soundtrack here we mixed the prerecorded playalong-track underneath for listening purpose. In truth there is only Nadiias flute to be heard – so that we can build the virtual orchestra in the end)

Back to Lwiw and leaving Ukraine

Serhij Jakobtschuk, a great choir-director and new friend also arrived quickly in the Café to meet with me and have some good talks, before I would leave the country. Right that moment, the electricity shut down, due to airstrikes of the Russians. In the moment, you are no where safe in Ukraine. Incredible – that all these great and peaceful people have to suffer under senceless and cruel attacks of stupid russian dictators – all the time – all the centuries – all over history. But the Russians will never win over the strong and free Ukrainian people.

Leaving Ukraine. Back to Lwiw instead of Kyjiv

This was not an easy decision to take. Should I continue my trip and go to Kyjiv, where I planned to meet the Kyiv-Chamber-orchestra. But everybody warned me to go to Kyjiv -better leave the country. Attacks like these had not taken place since the 24th of febuary. So cancelled my hotel and booked the Nighttrain back to Lwiw.

Odessa Philharmonic scheduled recording the Ukrainian Anthem for WP4U – but it was surprisingly cancelled due to Russian attacks

Today on Monday 10.10 it was scheduled to make a special recording of the Ukrainian Anthem for our international video project. But when I arrived at the philharmonic I just saw some disappointed musicians standing around. The recording had been cancelled. All night long missile alarms sounded. Right in that moment I heard a loud thunder-sound in the sky. “This has been a maybe a drone shot down by our military” – I was told by one of the musicians. “Here in Odessa, we are pretty safe, thanks to our military” – Today its cancelled, but maybe the recording would take place tomorrow – or not. Nobody knows.

Igor Chernetsky, the conductor of Odessa Opera who was due to conduct this recording, showed me his missile-warning app. All red!! This had not happened since the very first attacks on 24th of February 2022. The Russians had launched the most horrible attacks all over the country. And I was right in Odessa – kind of a strange feeling. From many people I was told: “its like 24th of February – with one difference: We are not afraid anymore!”

Celloplayer Artem plays baroque-music – that gives him peace in the middle of the danger. He feels a direct connection to God through Bachs music – and other baroque.

Ukraine as a whole had been attacked since Monday – revenge for the attack on Kertsch-Bridge. Ukrainians dare to defend themselves.

Odessa: amazing performance of ukrainian Opera “Katheryna” by contemporay composer Oleksandr Rodin

One day before their vacation the Odessa Opera showed an opera performance that was truely amazing. This picture shows main conductor Vjacheslav Chernuho-Volich together with second conductor Igor Chernetzky backstage right after the great success. Standing ovations.

– The premiere of Odessa-born 45 year old composer Oleksandr Rodin was just two weeks ago – after two years of rehearsals it was originally due at march 6th!! But because of war it was cancelled. And now they started to perform again – this was only the third performance at all!! I had the very great chance to be in the audience to see this performance. The tragic Opera “Kateryna” is a very ukrainian masterpiece by all artistic means. Composition, instrumentation, execution of the music, brilliant soloists, actors, choir, ballet dancers, staging, scenery, special effects – I would take many pages to write how excited I was to having had the chance to see, hear and live this incredible performance.

The libretto refers to a ballad by the ukrainian national poet/artist liberty hero Taras Shewtchenko – who was living in the time of Beethoven and Goethe.

The story of the opera: Ukrainian young lady Katheryna falls in love to a russian soldier and gets pregnant. But the soldier will leave for war somewhere else in Ukraine. Katheryna is warned not to fall in love with this soldier. An other ukrainian man loves Katheryna very much and even wants her to marry with the baby wich is not from him. But she refuses and waits for the soldier to come back. When he finally comes back, he does not know her anymore. All his comerades are terribly injured from the war, are drunk and are singing heroic war-songs. Many of them die or are even killed by their own comrades, like shooting a horse because of a broken leg. Because the lost love -Katheryna is desperate, leaves the baby in the forrest and chooses her own death.

right in the entreact, there was missile-alarm. So all the staff and audience had to go below the Operahouse into the Shelter. – This alert lasted only for 15 minutes, so the opera could well continue until its end.

The Luhansk Orchestra in the Organhall Lwiw

I met today the Luhansk-Philharmonic Orchestra in their new domicil, the Lwiw Organhall. This orchestra had in the last 8 years alredy lost their home for the second time. In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and started war in Luhansk, Donetzk – they fled to the west. But not far enough. A week before the first day of attacks feb 24th they senced clearly: “something will happen!” – and they fled again. To Lwiw!

Meeting with the director of the Organhall Lwiw

Right after the Mediacenter I had the pleasure to meet with Taras Demko, the director of the Lwiw Organhall – and his colleague Ivan, who conducts the Luhansk Philharmonic Orchestra. This Orchestra has already predicted the war on 15th of febuary 2022 – and most of them left their homes to come to their friends in Lwiw, where they found a new home until the war is over and the victory over the Russians is there. Taras told me also about an other very interesting project, Ukrainianlive-project. The Ukrainians decided to share for free the scores and parts of ALL their many, many brilliant composers – the world should know. All Orchestras in the world can download on this website what they are interested in, study the works of the ukrainian composers and perform them. Just that the ukrainian culture will be known to the world . See here on the website and download the app for your mobile phone to listen also to many of the scores.
